PIPEDREAM - Only Dreaming

This is the story of an English group based in London active in the mid-90’s who I discovered the existence of today with the release a few months ago of their first LP "Only Dreaming".

Brief history: the group was founded in 1991 from the London scene and decided to record a few songs in the studio in 1992 ; shortly after a new recording session in 1993 the quartet split .

Twenty years later this first remastered album sees the light of day consisting of 11 new songs . How can we describe the music of the quartet? Well it’s excellent Heavy Rock whose compositions comprise of influences as diverse as the grunge groups of the time such as Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam or Soundgarden, and their glorious seniors Led Zeppelin and The Doors mainly.

After listening several times to this opus it is confirmed that it contains beautiful gold nuggets such as "My Last Day" built on a base of riffs that alternate between sweetness and power taken away by the beautiful singing of David Leverno ; a superb composition which is printed immediately in the mind.

David Leverno in fact still marvels on "Only Dreaming" with his voice intensely passionate accompanied by a magnificent bass line and drums that is well groovy and "icing on the cake" of the beautiful chorus of finely chiseled guitar.

A little bit of groovy Heavy Blues rock with a large "G" this is the recipe for "Concept": the bass with different articulations, the combination of guitars concise and incisive, while the drumming restrained and powerful energetic vocals.

One of the most beautiful pearls of this LP is without doubt "Sink" which I was really captivated with, from the beginning to the end: a song of multiple intonations which affected me and superb melodic riffs that gives this a touch of additional madness.

The tempo is more heavy with "Big Tall Man" where one is surprised to meet the intonations of Jim Morrison in the voice of David that bring to light the beautiful chorus brimming with wah wah and a low hyper groove.

Finally what better way to finish this album of beauty than the song "Flow Free”, light with beautiful melodies highlights the last surge of riffs of the album.

A little treasure miraculously rescued from oblivion that I advise you to discover now!

USA REVIEW

PIPEDREAM - Only Dreaming

Holy Crap! Is it something new? Combining the sounds of Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Pearl Jam, Black Sabbath, and Hawkwind rolled up into one, this powerhouse quartet bring the sounds of Psychedelic, Space, and Alternative Rock rolled up into one and make it touch of the three genres to give it a giant group hug to show how much they really love the music.

The band was called Pipedream and their debut album, Only Dreaming, which was done in about six days and the songs were recorded as demo sessions between 1992 and 1993, is a laid-back, exhilarating, mind-boggling debut they’ve unleashed. They had been around since 1991 before they called it a day in 1994.

It's a shame that the quartet weren't getting anywhere, but this album of the sessions, shows they were ahead of their time. The band consisted of Rob Ryan on Bass, Martyn Wimbury on Drums, Ade Emsley (1992) and David Yates (1993) on Guitar, and David Leverno on Lead Vocals. While there are 11 tracks on here, the shifts, keeps the flow going to keep you ready for six centerpieces.

Big Tall Man ushers heavy doom metallic guitar riffs, calming drum beats as Yates does his homage to Tony Iommi’s driven lines to have the Sabbath sound while Rob comes up with some cool bass work while Leverno shouts and mellows on the vocals on the doom-waltz groove that is out of this world.

Opener, My Last Day is a blistering Space Rock adventure that starts the album off with a bang into the outer limits. It begins with this Eloy-like guitar line that Ade does as an homage to Frank Bornemann before the full-driven rocking out explosion kicks into full gear as David goes through his Jim Morrison and Eddie Vedder voice to get you ready for the journey as the guitar players help him out. You can imagine a shrieking nightmarish ‘70s punch that is completely unexpected to make you jump.

The heavy acid rock comes in handy that is a knockout on Feel. It’s a trip visiting the late ‘60s but with a heavy metallic twist as Ade goes into a thrilling yet haunting riffs on his guitar to give it a sinister feel before he goes into this wonderful homage to May Blitz’s For Madmen Only at the very end to make it a thrashing and speeding sound to close the track up with a big bang!

The heavy jazz-funk rock wah-wah roar, gives Pipedream a chance to lay back and get into a mellowing groove on Concept. Rob comes up with this cool bass line and the Hendrix-like style guitar sounds is a tribute to the master as David sings and speaks at the same time about how life is messed up as Yates, Martyn and Rob help him out to get the funky vibes that is beautiful while David helps them get the vibes flowing for the three of them.

Crazy Way’s blues and at times gothic punky vibe are Rob and Martyn’s time to shine as Rob begins this Devo-sque bass line while Martyn chills on the drums and more of the guitars heavy rocking workout exercise done by Ade while Flow Free goes into the Prog structures to close the album off. It starts off with an acoustic guitar flowing up into the clouds as it adds a cosmic voyage back into the heavier moments that makes it the perfect trip to head back home to earth thanks to Ade's guitar lines to knock it out of the ball park.

Only Dreaming is almost a lost and hidden treasure and feels as if it was recorded back in the late '70s/early '80s and recorded by an obscure band that were a hit-and-miss, but Pipedream could have been the real thing in England. This is a must listen to album and it will give the band the recognition they really deserve.

OTHER REVIEWS

The NME (On hearing Pipedream on The Organ's Goosebumps compilation) ;
" Compilations of this ilk succeed best when they throw up sparkling surprises. Pipedream provide one such joy, thrusting 'My Last Day' into the kind of savaged stratosphere normally reserved for The God Machine..."

Simon Williams

Music Week ;
"The Seattle influence looms large in this quartets sound, although it's more Mudhoney than Nirvana. No harm though as they have ideas of their own. Could appeal right across the board"

The Organ ( Demo review 1992) ;

Here’s a tape you all need to check out !

Pipedream are a London based band that mix the flow and feeling of Mudhoney or Pearl Jam with the English blues groove of Led Zeppelin. It’s probably the sound that The Cult strive for. They have a 70’s English hard rock feel mixed with a Sub-Pop N-band groove. It’s  not a rocking-out thing, it’s not Metal, much more Pearl Jam than Metal.

If Pearl Jam had some London dirt under their fingernails then they might be a little like Pipedream. Pipedream have a massive sound. Sure, it has bits of Mudhoney but it’s not as throwaway, bits of Pearl Jam but it’s not as retro.  Nirvana fans would love it but it’s not some second hand Nirvana riff experience. Too clean for the grunge tag, a singer who’s been compared  with Robert Plant. Pipedream are the band The Cult would like to be these days.  Sell your Pearl Jam albums to the Record and Tape exchange and buy this demo with the money, do it now, it will do you good. Mixing Soundgarden with Zeppelin, Afghan Whigs with The Cult and Bad Company and add x factor and London dirt. Pipedream are Organ approved !

Live Review ;

Tufnell Park Dome, London

Pipedream are getting better all the time, they just restored my faith in English hard rock, they’ve written a truck load of new songs that are going in the right way. Pipedream mix Zeppelin and Free with Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. The Englishness dominates in a Bad Co. way.

The guitarist plays a low slung Les Paul with attitude, the singer moves like Robert Plant and sounds like Paul Rodgers. What Pipedream don’t have, thankfully, are all those awful  “I’m a hard luvin man” lyrics. Check out a band from here who do things better than Pearl Jam. Pipedream are here to save English hard rock, has anyone in A&R land got the vision to sort it out. Another band to check out now, best hard rock band in London.
